LeanOhio Training

The LeanOhio Office provides a full range of learning opportunities. Included are overview sessions, White Belt Training (see below), Belt Certification (Yellow Belt, Green Belt, Black Belt), focused intensives (e.g., process mapping, 5S+, poka-yoke), and more. Training sessions are led by LeanOhio staff, LeanOhio Network members, and external experts.

Please note: These courses are available only to State of Ohio employees working at a State Agency, Board, or Commission.  We are currently unable to offer these classes to those who work for a public university, a local government, or the private sector.  For programs currently offered to employees of local governments, schools, and public universities, please click here.



Executive Overview Sessions 

Executive overview sessions provide agency leadership with an overview of LeanOhio services along with examples of how LeanOhio is making government simpler, faster, better, and less costly.

White Belt Training 
This session introduces participants to core Lean Six Sigma concepts. It shifts mindsets from tolerating process problems to addressing those problems and seeking solutions – while pointing the way to improvement opportunities and building interest in furthering people’s Lean learning. Sessions are led by LeanOhio Black Belts.

Yellow Belt Training

Yellow Belt training is an introductory course for learning about Lean thinking and how it can used to make daily improvements in the workplace. The training will focus on providing tools for attaining and sustaining awareness around Lean Daily Management.

LeanOhio Boot Camp: 
Transforming the Public Sector


LeanOhio Boot Camp is an intensive week-long training that gets people learning and using Lean methods and tools. The entire program is tailored to the public-sector workplace and public-sector processes. This is practical training aimed at generating results. Participants will be able to use their new knowledge and skills immediately – to make government simpler, faster, better, and less costly. (Belt earned after demonstrating use of a Lean tool in the workplace.)
Intended for: State and local government 
Length: 4 days + Project
Prerequisites: none
Project Expectations for state employees attending LeanOhio Boot Camp:  
   Complete one of the following projects:
   • 5S + Safety
   • Poka-yoke
   • Customer survey or focus group
   • Data collection and analysis
   • Simple improvement project
   • Serving as a fresh perspective during a Kaizen event

Green Belt Training

Green Belt training serves as the foundation for learning about Lean and Six Sigma, and about practical process improvement tools, techniques, and applications for overall improvements in the workplace. Participants are required to apply the knowledge and skills back in their agencies for process improvement projects, and to collaborate and mentor with other participants through their network of facilitators. (Belt earned after completing a Lean project.)
Intended for: State government 
Length: 2 weeks + Project (1st week is Boot Camp training)
Prerequisites:
   • Completion of LeanOhio Boot Camp training
   • Completion and reporting of a Boot Camp project 
   • Submission of a Green Belt application and selection by a Green Belt panel
Project Expectations:  
   • Complete an improvement project using the DMAIC methodology
   • Collect and use data as a part of the project
   • Demonstrate use of Lean tools
   • Present the project and results to a group of LeanOhio peers and agency colleagues
   • Submit the presentation file for posting to the LeanOhio website

Black Belt Training

Stay tuned for information regarding the next available Black Belt class and application period.


Black Belt training is an intensive five-week course (extending over a number of months) focused on Lean and Six Sigma principles and tools. The course provides instruction and practice on methods to cut waste, save time, increase customer focus, and reduce costs. A full week focuses on how to scope and conduct a Kaizen event. Black Belts can collect and analyze data, co-facilitate Kaizen events, guide other types of improvement projects, and measure agency results.
Intended for: State government 
Length: 5 weeks of training over approximately 6 months (3 weeks for Green Belts)
Prerequisites:
   • Completion of LeanOhio Boot Camp and Green Belt training
   • Completion and reporting of Boot Camp and Green Belt projects
   • Submission of a Black Belt application and selection by a Black Belt panel
Belt earned: Black (after completing and reporting on a data-rich Black Belt project that will be assigned by the trainee's agency)
